This course proposes the exploration of the poetic and musical world at the time of Al-Andalús through the Spirit of Cordoba. In view of the sung tradition of Judeo-Spanish Romances and classicals song from thé tradition of Andalous Music from Morocco, the repertoire of the Cantigas de Santa Maria will be approached, devotional songs written and compiled by King Alfonse De Castille. Known as Alfonso el Sabio, this enlightened 13th century monarch welcomed Jewish, Christian and Muslim musicians into his court. Historical contentIn 1492, following the decree of expulsion pronounced by Isabella of Castile, the Jewish population of Spain left Al Andalous and La Convivencia which characterized it, taking with it a secular and sacred repertoire of great beauty, multi-secular and transmitted orally. Welcomed in the former Ottoman Empire, and in the Maghreb countries (northern Morocco in particular), the Cantigas will be tinged with the musical styles and languages of the host countries.
